Visiting Mercia - WAY THROUGH by Upset the Rhythm

Hello again!
We're releasing a cassette through Comfortable On A Tightrope next month! The tape is entitled 'Enclosure' and the first song from the 10 track album can be heard above. 'Visiting Mercia' continues in the tradition of 'Adlestrop', 'I Remember, I Remember' and 'Pershore Station' as a "train window" poem, only set to sound with Claire's vocal and a cameo from a hooded crow. Kilpeck is a small village in Herefordshire, a few miles east from the Welsh border. We made a special trip over Xmas to see the incredible Norman / Pagan carvings decorating the tiny Church of St Mary & St David. The sandstone figures (attributed to the Herefordshire School of Stonemasons) depict the tree of life, human consuming beasts, green men, dolphins, hares, demons, serpents, musicians and even a sheela na gig! Whiteleaf is a hamlet in Buckinghamshire that we visited to see the monumental chalk cross carved into the hillside that dominates the horizon of the village. We went up at dusk to explore the cross and found not only had it snowed up there but some WWI practices trenches, a neolithic barrow and an enigmatic message scratched in pen onto the broken information board overlooking the chalk slope. Here's a painting Paul Nash made in 1931 of the Whiteleaf Cross.

After visiting the Sandham Memorial we were driving through some cryptic country lanes of rural Hampshire and randomly came across Watership Down. I had no idea that this was actually a real place so we made a pilgrimage in honour of childhood obsessions with the Richard Adams book and the animated film from 1978. At the end of the story when Hazel meets the ghostly rabbit folk spirit El-ahrairah and is invited to leave his friends and body behind to run into an afterlife through the blooming primroses I am left destroyed. I'm pretty sure this was my first exposure to the concept and reality of death and I can't watch this without openly weeping like an emotional mess. The beautiful winter light coloured the fields and downs to stunning effect as we walked past a mysterious heap of flowers and a lonely series of horse jumps. I've never been anywhere like this before, it was heavy on the poignant.

We have been busy putting the finishing touches to our new tape, which will be out on Manchester's Comfortable on a Tightrope label later in the year. We're also editing a video for our song Bledlow Cross, which is on the tape, and have been researching a new project about the longest roads, paths and trackways in London.

Furthermore, we have produced a new badge, with heraldic theme, pictured below. They are enamel badges with a butterfly pin and are available to purchase for £2.50 including postage in the UK.

Designed as a guided walk around parts of E2, it is a personal and meditative exploration of multiple histories, with an emphasis on the supernatural everyday and the resonant nature of the landscape.

Firstly, major thank yous to everyone who came to our record release party last Friday, what a fun evening!! Today sees said record 'Arrow Shower' hit the shops all over the world and so we wanted to celebrate that fact by posting a few photographs...

Our album is pressed on white vinyl and the comes with a lyric sheet and obligatory download card. The cover depicts a collision of ancient and more modern English custom and ritual drawn and dawbed in paints by ourselves.

The back cover uses a tracklisting to take you through two alternate journeys between each of our parents' houses from our village of Bayston Hill, where we grew up and met each other. We used to meet at certain points along the journey and these again are drawn by ourselves in wobbly detail with a keen nostalgia.

WAY THROUGH are a pastoral punk duo originally from Shropshire, now residing in London. Informed by the field as much as the flyover, Way Through write songs which phase in and out with guitar, tapes, damaged drums and vocals. Using wrong-footed repetition, rapid interplay and free-looping happenstance the band create a ragged yet intuitive tapestry of sound. Their songs walk the streets of market towns, wait forever at bus stops and lose themselves in edgelands. 'Arrow Shower' is the title of Way Through's debut album, recorded in their practice space Deep House during a particularly heavy snowstorm in early winter 2011. The name of the album is taken from a set text of Philip Larkin's 'Whitsun Weddings' heavily annotated by a 14 year old schoolboy found in a junk shop in Much Wenlock, often described as England's most perfect village. Way Through find great resonance with the spirit of place and try and channel its feeling into their music, joining the dots between lost places and deteriorating histories. 'Arrow Shower' is out in stores from October 10th but you can get one early at this party in celebration of its release!

BOMBER JACKETS are the keyboard-glooping, routemaster-riding observational super group of Russell and Dan from The Pheromoans and Sian of Plug. Using a simple pallette of synth, electronic drums and vocals the group tackle a number of songs which call on Lime as much as Mark E Smith. They have a tape of perverse weird outs, a recent split 7" with The Rebel and a new lathe cut of smash hit 'Hot Georgian Summer' available now on Epic Sweep.

THE STICKS are a stripped down garage party trio from Brighton. They bash drums, sway on the bass and claw at guitar - often swapping over instruments between songs live - and yelp with melodic abandon and delight. The Sticks were recently dubbed as 'semi-amateur', this may be true. With cheap, unreliable equipment they manage to tease out a cacophony of crashing drums and raucous guitar melodies. Thumping deconstructions of 60s riffage give way to more moody bass driven post-punk clatter, shown excellently with their debut album on Upset The Rhythm and recent 7" on M'Lady's.

Here's our video for Way Through track 'W. B.'

It's a song about Wiltshire, shaven heads and chivalry.

The video draws on imagery from traditional Pace Egg plays, especially themes of fateful fighting and cycles of dance and rebirth.

It was directed by Charles Chintzer Lai on the coldest day of the year (it actually hailed!) and was filmed on location at the dilapidated science museum in the grounds of St George In The East in Stepney. Thanks to everyone who helped out and "starred" in the video for making it possible. You are all brilliant!

In other news, we just received our final masters for our forthcoming LP 'Arrow Shower', these are awaiting final approval from our new third member!

We had a blast last night playing with Private Trousers and Left Leg et al at Uberstompf, we're now playing one more show before Xmas too, this time with Plug at the esteemed CLOD HOP 2, held at the Dalston Victoria this time on December 8th. So recently we have been touring historic houses, drinking milkshakes and thinking about the supernatural.

And spending lots of time in our tiny space where we practice. I always wonder what the dazed people on the 55 bus think when we get on it at 1.30am with all our gear to go home, completely worn out and drenched with sweat. One of us will always fall over trying to carry all our stuff.
We practice in a place called Netill House in Hackney, an ex-squat that has been subdivided into a warren of artist's studios and other random spaces. There is a cafe on the top floor which provides awesome views of the City and allow you to see the police helicopters in their semi-permanent circuits around the borough. There are always impromptu parties going on and although the building is full of people you still feel like the last person alive when you roam the corridors at night. I am going to take my camera next time to share.

Anyways, there is a couple of new bits and pieces on the songs front. A new song, Tall Poppy, has been added to the myspace. We've also got lots of shows coming up, starting on 3rd July where we are absolutely honoured to be playing the last show at Barden's Boudoir. This place has been really important to us and we've both worked there, partied there and played on the stage there in our previous groups, so we are thrilled to be able to play in our new band. There's a facebook group to join to get on the list to guarantee entry. It's going to be a crazy night. We're also playing in Brighton for Sex is Disgusting on 14th July, which is really exciting! Our last show in July will be on 26th with Wild Nothing at CAMP Basement, so we'll be old hands at the live shows malarkey by the end of the month. Maybe.

This month I am extremely excited to be hosting Hype Williams, Way Through and Chad Valley at this months Plain Song.

Sonic experimenters Hype Williams have been making music and touring for years now, often working with various collaborators they have evolved from a band into a free form art project. They specialize in creating immersive bass driven sound-scapes using paired down vocals, synths and electronic beats. They often use appropriated audio that gives their music an emphasis on nostalgia. They’re innovative and obscure sound ranges from the warm and fuzzy to the jarring and oppressive, but it is always incredibly compelling.

Way Through are two people phasing in and out with guitar, samples, damaged drums and vocals. They play prism punk; ragged intuitive songs shot through with technicolour noise. Using repetition, swift interplay and happenstance they have a sound which is both fun and challenging, a sound that do anything and go anywhere.

OUR FIRST SHOW - SALFORD SWEEPS

So yes! We played our first show ever last weekend and we survived! Under the influence of tiredness at the wheel, copious Fall CDs and something inedible from a service station en route we played a show in Salford as part of the Sounds Of The Other City festival, our stage curated by Manchester wunderkinds Comfortable On A Tightrope.

It was a perfect grey Salford day and we saw a lot of great bands including Girl Mountain, Divorce, Dinner Party, Waiters, Sex Hands, Pheromoans, No Womb and our best buds Talk Normal too. Myself and Claire felt it went "fairly" well and we were strangely prepared so it wasn't totally seat of the pants, what's next? I have no idea conditions. Immediate feedback from the onlooking crowd suggested we played too loud, sound like a gamelan version of Joy Division (Salford!) have good songs at the start and end of the set and something pretty weird in the middle, so all in all we're more than satisfied and encouraged to continue damaging our/your hearing. I hope you like our pictures! from the show! The Dalmation was the guardian of the left PA speaker whilst we all admired our new watches that could add up numbers, transfer phone numbers and tell the time and everything! TECHNOLOGY. OK, more soon for you!

NEUROTIC TO THE BONE

We have recorded a few new songs this weekend, early morning style under the influence of epic hangovers, at our recording space in Acton. We were energised by the fantastic Please/Peepholes/Jelas/Dignan Porch show on Saturday and inspired to work through the pain! Added to the myspace, at myspace.com/wearewaythrough.

While we were practising, one of the amps Chris was using kept picking up transmissions from another studio next door. This meant that we enjoyed listening to a band covering Basket Case by Green Day for over an hour. We even joined in for a while, but had no idea if our version reached them.

We have also confirmed our first show on the 26th May at the exciting Stour Space in Hackney. This is an industrial space in Homerton that hosts art exhibitions and parties, and we are psyched to be asked to play there. We'll post more details soon.

This week sees us trying to finish another couple of songs, and make firm plans to do some proper recording for our 7" which we want to release after Easter. Super busy!

Hey! As promised we locked the door, turned the lights off/volume up and pressed record in one of the most fucked-up rehearsal rooms in London last weekend in an attempt to radiate some sound to tape. The head-sized hole in the wall was there when we arrived as was the scent of a sweaty adolescent metal band, but that wasn't going to stop us. After 4 hours we'd recorded about 6 songs with a variety of skill, some of those songs (arguably the best of the bunch) are now cycling around here:

SAD TWIN was the first song we wrote and pretty much deals with an event of jaw-dropping exploitation in Bethnal Green that Claire witnessed first hand during her daily walk to work, ask her about it sometime!

BROTHER'S RAPID is in instrumental version here as the take with vocals ended up sounding a bit too much (in my head) like They Might Be Giants (having an asthma attack) or if you are as kind as Claire like Bare Naked Ladies, low blow! It was only one small part of the song, but that's what you get from pulling thoughts out of book against the clock.

NOCTURNAL MIDDLE RUMBLES is the first in an ongoing series of covers we will be performing by perhaps the best band ever to climb out of Folkestone; The Shadow Ring. It has a lovely phrase in it about catching pneumonia through letting "pushy nature" intimidate you.
